What are some books that Expand our Minds?
It's always good to expand yourself, and there are a lot of things you can learn from your own experiences. You may not be able to go back in time and read them all when you're younger, but it's easy to open up new avenues and discover a wealth of knowledge. Whether you want to improve your memory, sharpen a skill or become more confident, you'll find something useful if you read widely. Below we've compiled some excellent books to take on the road to further understanding.
Book 1 - The Good Reads by Robert Browning
As one of the most renowned English poets, Robert Browning (1729-1794) was known for his deep interest in literature. Although he wrote many poems, such as "The Nightingale," which explores themes around love and beauty, the best-known work he is famous for is an epic poem called The Picture of Dorian Gray. In this book, Browning describes a story of two men who fall in love with each other while their souls find themselves trapped in the deepest parts of hell. After they die, they have left no note for the other person. As one reads through The Good Reads, one will discover the different ways people deal with death, whether these ways are good or bad, and how a relationship can affect both partners' perspectives. We love this novel because its characters don't have all that much control over what happens to them, instead having to rely on fate. However, Browning demonstrates how difficult it can be when one partner dies and leaves behind a loved one who is still not gone yet.
Book 2 - The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S Lewis
C.S Lewis is renowned for being among the first science fiction authors that have created memorable worlds where readers feel like they are living in them. He had written several books before his bestselling Chronicles of Narnia series. These books were published between 1955 and 1964. While these novels are set in present times, they revolve around stories written decades ago, giving insight into our culture through magical and fantastical elements. With a large collection of short story collections and books, these titles are perfect for young children of all ages.
Book 3 - Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley's classic Gothic novel Frankenstein tells the tale of Victor Frankenstein and his creature, a human monster named Henry Clerval. Victor became obsessed with creating perfection, leading him to create the monster that would eventually become his life companion. This novel was published in 1818, making it one of the oldest published works of literature to date. Victor attempts to make the creature resemble himself to keep it safe, which leads to the creation of a terrible monster. Book 4 - Lord Of The Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
Another master author of fantasy literature, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. These books follow different characters across a wide range of countries as they fight against evil forces in Middle Earth. One of my favorite aspects of these books is their similarities to modern reality. For example, both Thor and Professor Trelawney show just how similar the world has grown over the centuries. Overall, these fantasy novels bring the reader closer to their inner-self by teaching valuable lessons about life and how important family is for happiness and success.
Book 5 - The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games trilogy is another popular title among kids, thanks largely to the film adaptation. A group of teens takes part in a war for survival after a mysterious girl disappears from her home district. There are also multiple sequels, with the original movie having been released in 2012. Similar to past films, the current trilogy follows Katniss Everdeen, a leader of the District 12 student rebellion. Each protagonist must fight to protect the Capitol from tyrannical president Snowden. The franchise made its debut in 2009, making it one of the longest-running ever.
Book 6 – Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone by JK Rowling
Harry Potter and his buddies are often seen fighting villains from the wizarding world in Peter Pettigrew and John Lewis adventures, so it's fitting that the next installment of this series was published years later. Once again, everyone joins together for the common goal of defeating Lord Voldemort. The plot starts small, though, with Hagrid saving Diagon Alley, leaving children orphaned by the events unfolding in London. When Prince Ginny sets off to rescue these children, things start to change for everyone. Can she save herself and help others before everything goes dark? This latest adventure is packed full of action elements and is sure to entertain all ages alike.
Book 7 - 1984 From George Orwell To Jeremy Irons
Although George Orwell won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and J K Rowling created a masterpiece in terms of storytelling, none of these three writers is better known than David Aikman. His dystopian classic novel 1984 outlines the struggles of someone born at birth in 1948, living in a totalitarian state under a dictatorial government. An absolute dictatorship has taken place throughout the country, and people have no rights or freedoms after its introduction. I think it's safe to say that nothing else compares to reading The Nineties to gain a deeper understanding of the effects of political systems and societal structures. Although there is plenty in this book worth discussing, there are some points that stood out for me, such as the lack of privacy and freedom, and how little power many people have over their own lives. This book continues to captivate readers and teach us several valuable lessons about our society today.
Books 8 - Slaughterhouse Five By Kurt Vonnegut
Kurt Vonnegut was nominated for four Pulitzer Prizes, winning the award for The Catcher in the Rye. His novel titled Slaughterhouse Five begins when five soldiers are sent to torture innocent civilians in an attempt to extract information. Unfortunately, they are captured and sentenced to death. Later, they are recruited into a secretive program called Project MKUltra. During his time in charge, Bill O'Shea becomes dissatisfied with what he sees as a waste of resources and decides that he wants people to remember him. Throughout his experience working for the US Army Special Forces Unit Alpha Company, Kurt faces a variety of enemies that challenge his beliefs about morality. As a result, O'Shea suffers from hallucinations and amnesia, including seeing dead body parts. Eventually revealing that his mental health is deteriorating due to PTSD, O'Shea is forced to kill a former friend and his wife, forcing him to confront his darkest fears. All in all, it's a fascinating portrayal of the darkness that lies inside of humanity's minds, which makes this novel even more relevant than it might seem on the surface.
Book 9 - Catch Me Before You Fall by Lauren Oliver
I think that anyone that loves true crime stories and murder mysteries will enjoy this incredible suspense thriller by Lauren Oliver, The Haunting of Hill House. Set primarily in New York City during World War II, this thrilling narrative follows a woman whose husband has been arrested for treason against the United States. She believes that her husband committed suicide, and goes to his apartment to find clues about what happened. But as she digs around, things get worse as she uncovers evidence that proves him guilty. Ultimately, her search leads her to discover strange supernatural occurrences. Though we may never know every detail, we do know that certain events would scare anyone who hasn't faced them. On top of that, her husband is alive, meaning she and everyone else would have to face down monsters, ghosts, and monsters that live within the walls of the house.
Book 10 - The Secret Agent By Mark Greaney
One of the most exciting thrillers I'd recommend, The Secret Agent follows seven assassins tasked with taking down a highly dangerous criminal mastermind. Their mission is complicated by a secret agent and various pieces of technology that allow them to communicate secretly. Despite being an incredibly well-written and interesting piece, this title doesn't contain any graphic or bloody scenes. Instead, Greaney focuses on interpersonal battles, witty dialogue, and intrigue. The way Greaney writes allows audiences to see the main character's thoughts and feelings through their words rather than through their actions. They are intelligent characters that readers will connect with on an emotional level and give insights into how they feel. If you like thrillers with twists and turns and nail-biting climaxes, then this one should be your pick.
Book 11 - Mr. Mayor By Scott Adams
Mr. Mayor is an American comedy-drama novel written by Scott Adams. Published in 2006, the book followed Nick Woodruff as a thirty-one-year-old politician struggling to balance his professional life with his marriage to Martha. When he loses his job and falls bankrupt, he seeks comfort in the company of his eccentric friends and neighbors. However, he soon finds himself increasingly isolated and alone, struggling to come to grips with things that are outside of his control. Mr. Mayor received positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising its comedic feel and satirical approach to politics. Most importantly, this title illustrates how politicians can affect their audience by using humor even when they fail to realize it. Many people believe that Adam’s mayor persona hides a desperate man struggling to cope with his newfound circumstances. As a fan of this American comedian’s work and work, it's impossible to deny why.
Book 12 - Finding Nemo By Peter Benchley And Robert Zemeckis
Finding Nemo was originally based on the scientific curiosity of marine biologist, Dr. Robert Ballard. Over twenty million copies of the novel were sold, generating millions of dollars for Benchley and Zemeckis. The book details the journey of a clownfish named Marlin who is abandoned by scientists and moved into an aquarium by a zoologist
